True Freedom
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” ~John 8:36
As Americans, July naturally causes us to reflect on freedom, even more so on this 250th celebration of our nation. We are grateful for the many blessings that come with living in a nation where we can worship freely, gather openly, proclaim the gospel without fear, and raise our families according to our own personal convictions. These are gifts from God that should never be taken for granted.
Yet as followers of Christ, we know there is a freedom even greater than political liberty.
In John 8, Jesus spoke to a group of people who were confident they were already free. They pointed to their heritage, their traditions, and their standing. But Jesus gently exposed a deeper reality: external freedom does not necessarily mean internal freedom. A person can be free in body yet enslaved in heart.
The same is true today.
Many people live in a free country yet remain bound by fear, guilt, shame, bitterness, addiction, anxiety, pride, or the endless pursuit of approval. Others spend their lives trying to earn God’s favor, carrying burdens they were never meant to bear. Despite all our modern conveniences and freedoms, countless people are still searching for peace.
Jesus offers something radically different.
He came to do more than improve our circumstances. He came to rescue us from the power of sin itself. Through His perfect life, sacrificial death, and victorious resurrection, He accomplished what we never could. He broke the chains of sin and opened the way for us to be reconciled to God.
This is why the gospel is such good news.
In Christ, we are forgiven rather than condemned. We are adopted rather than abandoned. We are loved rather than rejected. We are no longer slaves to sin but children of God. The freedom Jesus gives is not temporary, political, or circumstantial—it is eternal.
As we move through the summer ministry season, this is our prayer for every guest and volunteer who comes to Maranatha. We pray that they would experience more than a time away. We pray that they will encounter the living Christ. We pray that weary believers would be refreshed, struggling families would be encouraged, children would grow in their faith, and those who do not yet know Jesus would discover the freedom that only He can give.
Thank you for praying alongside us. God continues to work in remarkable ways, and we are grateful for your partnership in the ministry He has entrusted to us.
