How's Your Race?
“How well am I running? How do I even measure it?”
You may have wondered this in your Christian journey. We look at our spiritual growth (or lack thereof) and question if we’re doing the right things or pursuing God like we should. Sometimes we need to wrestle with that. But more often, we simply need to adjust our focus. Matt Mason explains:
“We can’t run the race looking at our feet. Introspection can provide some help and insight into how we’re doing, but it doesn’t give us propulsive power to move forward, it doesn’t motivate us in endurance.”
It’s true that growing in Christ and fighting sin requires looking at ourselves honestly and repenting of the idols in our hearts (approval of others, comfort, success, pleasure, etc). But looking inward will never motivate us for long. Ultimately, the way to run the lifelong race is to feed our affections with something better:
“If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” Colossians 3:1-3
Like Hebrews 12, this passage reminds us to fix our eyes on Jesus. He is the one who motivates us to endure. We’re not running to prove our salvation is real or to keep God happy with us. We’re running because God has redeemed us and given us a desire to love Him more deeply and pursue Him faithfully until we reach eternity!
